How the footage and Laws apply

Watch how the referee anticipated play and adjusted position between the right-flank attack and the goal. As the through ball was played to the right, the referee kept the runner in view, jogged in small steps and accelerated towards the challenge when the pass went in behind. The referee then moved closer to a challenge near the goal line as the cross was about to be delivered. It is possible the referee felt they had moved too far into the penalty area. In the brief moment before the cross, the referee looked over the shoulder and stepped backwards. Looking away momentarily with the challenge so close calls for confidence, but that quick check helped secure a view of the pass into the middle and the final shot. The adjustment was an excellent piece of positioning.
