This unusual sequence shows why a VAR review took place after a yellow card and how it led to a dropped ball. The on-field decision was a foul and a caution for SPA. Under the VAR protocol, a caution alone is not normally reviewable. The VAR intervened because the incident might instead have warranted a sending-off for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity (DOGSO), and recommended an OFR. While checking for DOGSO, the referee judged that there had been no foul at all. Once the foul was overturned, its associated caution was rescinded. Because the referee had stopped play and then changed the decision to no foul, play restarted with a dropped ball. The review began with a possible red card, not with the yellow card itself.
